about anna

I'm a painter based in Oxford, working from a studio on a farm in the Buckinghamshire countryside. I grew up on the Gulf Coast of the United States — that particular light, that particular relationship with water and land — and though I've lived in England for many years, that sensibility still moves through my work.

My paintings are made in oil, often alongside drawings in charcoal, ink, and print. The natural inks I use are gathered from the farm itself — oak gall, walnut, plant matter — which feels important: a way of staying close to the material world, attending to what's already there.

I hold a PhD in practice-based research and an MA in Christianity and the Arts, and I've lectured and presented on the intersection of art and theology at conferences held at the University of Oxford and the National Gallery. That academic thread runs alongside the studio practice rather than above it — the questions I ask in research are the same ones I take into the paintings.

What I'm drawn to, in the end, is the sacred in ordinary things — not as a religious proposition, but as an invitation. The quality of light in a room. The weight of a familiar object. The way beauty shows up where we aren't quite expecting it. I make work for people who notice those things.
